ABOUT WORKSHOP

Born in France in 1974, Yannick Dauby is one of the recognised figures working in field recording and electroacoustic composition. Based in Taiwan since 2007, Yannick has produced a large body of work documenting a personal interaction with these islands: their inhabitants (non-human and human) and ecologies (aquatic, terrestrial, aerial).

The first edition Ting Shuo Masterclass will be a rare opportunity to benefit from Yannick Dauby’s extensive research and artistic practice.
– Discover new ways of encountering and engaging with the sonic environment
– Learn about different field recording technology and techniques
– Learn through experience in the field
– Communicate your new understandings to an audience through sound recordings
– Use our equipment and/or bring your own

Here is an introduction from Yannick:
“I am inviting you to a listening experience, a mediated one.
Through recording technology, let’s explore four locations in Tainan (and eventually its surroundings). If you have portable sound recording equipment, just bring it. After an introduction evening to the technical and artistic processes involved in field recordings, we’ll visit different kind of places. During two days, we’ll concentrate on : psychogeographical wandering and attentive listening, some sound notations exercises, and of course some recording sessions. Then we’ll go back indoor, for preparing our selection of sounds, basic editing and processing, in order to share our listening experience with open audience. Think about architectural sonic environment, perception through experimentation, documentary for the ears, discussions about our hated and/or beloved cities”.

We welcome you to the Ting Shuo Winter Masterclass: Yannick Dauby, Listening In The Field.

Review: Fragile Beauty by City Contemporary Dance Company

A grim picture of the decline of happiness in Hong Kong, with relentless movement and enough screeching to warrant earplugs

by:Natasha Rogai

Internationally acclaimed Tibetan choreographer Sang Jijia’s last creation for City Contemporary Dance Company was the award-winning As If To Nothing in 2009. Last year he became the troupe’s resident choreographer and Fragile Beauty is his first new work in that role.

The premise of the production is the decline of life and happiness (the “fragility of beauty”) in a city – here, presumably, Hong Kong.

There are glimpses of Sang’s undoubted skill as a choreographer, but the piece resorts too much to dialogue instead of expressing ideas through movement and while it’s good to see artists tackle major local issues, the picture Sang paints is so unremittingly bleak that it fails to engage.

The piece opens with all the dancers on stage wearing long, brightly coloured skirts, in which they whirl and swirl before trooping off and returning in grim, prison uniform like costumes of white and grey which set the tone for the rest of the performance.

The choreography bears Sang’s hallmarks of relentless kineticism and emphasis on ensemble work, where the dancers’ individuality is suppressed in favour of the group.

There are some striking images, notably where a row of dancers spread out across the stage, slowly sink to their knees in unison while others continue to move. However, the choreography’s insistence on constant motion becomes tiring to watch.

Contrast is similarly lacking in terms of emotion – the city is portrayed as a nightmare in which its hapless residents are trapped, with no note of hope.

There are scenes of violence and chaos (a reference to Occupy Central and its aftermath, perhaps). One trio, with two men brutally attacking a girl who screams at the top of her voice throughout, is almost unendurable, not least for the ears.

Another sequence, which appears to refer to Sars, employs multiple voices speaking at the same time and a lot of shrill screeching – the result is excruciating and makes one long to push a mute button.

Two appealing monologues (in Chinese with English translation) by dancers about their childhood memories of Hong Kong and how old neighbourhoods have been transformed provide some respite from the tension but are overlong and seem disconnected from the rest of the piece.

The dancers perform with commendable energy and commitment. Dickson Dee’s menacing, percussion-dominated score contributes to the sense of angst, as does Sang’s cleverly conceived, claustrophobic set of moving dark grey walls which hem in the stage.

About Sang Jijia

As If To Nothing

Rerun

Pass through the ashes of time, recreate the memories between you and me

2010 Hong Kong Dance Awards

– Outstanding Dance Production

– Outstanding Achievement in Choreography

“The choreography is supremely kinetic, with endlessly flowing movement that requires the dancers to contort every part of their bodies.” – South China Morning Post, Hong Kong

“A cutting-edge work.” – Global Times, Beijing

Enter the maze of déjà vu, trapped by our own memories. In every delicate moment, memories seem so close and yet so far. It is slowly swallowed by time. Struggling between remembering and forgetting scattered names, distorted faces, floating time, transforming scenes and familiar plots. What is left inside is emptiness. In this misplaced world, what is real? What is fake?

As If To Nothing is an adrenaline-packed and interactive multimedia work created by the internationally renowned choreographer Sang Jijia, featuring electronic music by Dickson Dee and video design by Adrian Yeung. This tour-de-forcereturns for another breathtaking journey led by CCDC dancers and their extremely physical and emotional performance.

About Sang Jijia

Acclaimed as “the most perfect dancer”, Sang Jijia was selected by the influential American choreographer William Forsythe to work with him at the Frankfurt Ballet for four years. At 23, Sang won the top prize in the men’s section of the 1996 Paris International Modern Dance Competition. He was hailed by the Guangdong province as “Star of the Century” in 1997. At 27, he joined the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative and studied choreography in Germany. Sang’s choreography combines extremely intense physical movement and unique rhythm to create psychological tension and anisotropy. As an internationally renowned choreographer, Sang has choreographed and performed for numerous well-known dance companies in Europe and Asia at their invitation.

Introduction to the Concepts Behind Momentum

A central idea in Chinese culture is the Doctrine of the Mean, or the Middle Way. It is often understood as not too much or too little. This concept of equilibrium is especially important in modern society. The mutual generation and conquest between the Five Elements (wu xing, namely metal, wood, water, fire and earth) in Taoism is a manifestation of the system of equilibrium. However, with rapid urban development and ecological imbalance, it is difficult for men to keep neutral. It is with this in mind that Momentum was created: using Taoist concepts of Nine Halls Diagram (jiu gong), Eight Trigrams (ba gua) and Five Elements as foundation; dance, sound and installation as media; this is an earth-purifying ritual with a message of environmental protection.

Renowned experimental musician Dickson Dee is a long-term collaboration of CCDC. A design teacher introduced him to the Taoist concepts of Nine Halls Diagram, Eight Trigrams and Five Elements when he was a student, bringing his attention to the equilibrium between things and how he can draw inspirations from it. Dickson has been applying these ideas to graphic design, abstract painting and music composition. The ideas are still influencing his life today.

The diagrams in the ancient Yellow River Chart (he tu) and the Inscription of the River Luo (luo shu) are an important part of the philosophies explained in the Book of Changes. They are also the source of the Nine Halls Diagram. Episode I of Momentum is performed at the Peak. Dickson first divides the performance space into nine squares, echoing the Nine Halls Diagram. Then he works out the Eight Trigrams based on cardinal directions. From there, he derives the Five Elements of each area. Each Element has its own corresponding sound, equivalent to Do, Re, Mi, So, La in Western musical scale. There are also corresponding colours, emotions, movements, even internal organs… This forms a framework, within which choreographer Xing Liang and Mui Cheuk-yin create the dance work according to the numerology of each dancer. The pace, the movement, the beginning, the end, everything about the work comes from this framework, echoing the corresponding Element. At the same time, Dickson also places 21 pieces of rock according to the framework. Some are filled with water, others hold plants, branches or urban refuse. A few pieces of wood coal are placed in the other end of the performance space, symbolising the natural cycle of life and death. The music and sound effects are also created according to the same framework.

The performance is devised to evoke a sense of harmony, peace and joy, as well as to cultivate a new understanding of nature, space, traditional culture and environmental protection.

Episode I, “Natural Forest Version”, is a site-specific dance work performed in an open, grass-covered park, whereas Episode II, “Concrete Forest Version” is performed in the confined space of an art gallery. Likewise, the work is based on Taoist concepts, with multimedia and sound installations laid out according to the Nine Halls Diagram, Eight Trigrams and Five Elements. Visitors can take part in this interactive game according to the animal that represents their birth year, to find quietness and serenity in this loud and bustling city.
